Nepal plane crash kills 15

Nepal plane crash kills 15
KATHMANDU  - A small plane crashed near a treacherous high-altitude airport in northern Nepal on Monday, killing 15 people while six others miraculously survived, police said. The aircraft belonging to local carrier Agni Air ploughed into the ground just outside Jomsom airport, a gateway to the Annapurna mountain range, shortly after the pilot reported a fault. “Fifteen people have been killed. Thirteen of them were Indian tourists and the other two were Nepali pilots,” police spokesman Binod Singh told AFP. He said there were six survivors, among them a Nepali air hostess and an Indian man who is being treated for head injuries.
The Danish foreign ministry in Copenhagen said two Danes had also been rescued and were being treated in the city of Pokhara, 60 kilometres (40 miles) from Jomsom.
Basanta Dawadi, of the Pokhara tourism council, said he had spoken to the pair, a man and woman in their early 30s who were both trekkers.
“They told me the plane was about to land and suddenly it ascended and its left wing hit something. The plane rolled and then plunged into the ground. The emergency door opened and they crawled out of the aircraft.
“They told me they lost consciousness and then they were rescued.”
The man had foot injuries while the woman had a cut on her throat, Dawadi said.
The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu said two Indian children aged nine and six had been pulled out alive from the wreckage. It released no details about their injuries but said they had been taken to hospital.
The Indian group had chartered the flight from Pokhara for a pilgrimage to Muktinath, a sacred place for Hindus and Buddhists at the foot of the Thorong La pass in the Himalayas, local police spokesman Rajendra Singh Bhandari said.
“A Nepal army barracks is near the accident site which made the rescue of survivors easier,” he added, saying they had been airlifted to Pokhara, a city popular with foreign trekkers and tourists.
Dozens of army and police personnel scoured the steep hillside where the plane had come to rest, picking through the wreckage and scattered personal effects.
Bimlesh Lal Karna, head of Nepal’s national rescue department, said the pilot had reported a warning light flashing in the cockpit as he descended to Jomsom.
The pilot told air traffic control moments before the crash that he was diverting back to Pokhara, said Karna.
“The aircraft seems to have lost balance,” Karna told AFP.
Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai issued a statement saying he was “deeply saddened” by the accident, while the Indian embassy set up a hotline providing information for desperate relatives.
“I express condolences to the bereaved families and wish for the speedy recovery of the injured,” Bhattarai said.
The incident was the second deadly air accident for Agni Air in less than two years.
In August 2010, one of its planes crashed in bad weather near Kathmandu, killing all 14 people on board, including four Americans, a Japanese and a British national.
The latest fatal crash in Nepal - the fifth in less than two years - will lead to new scrutiny of the country’s numerous small airlines, which provide vital links to remote parts of the country.
Jomsom Airport, at an elevation of 2,707 metres (8,880 feet), has a reputation for being one of the world’s most dangerous airfields due to the mountainous terrain on the approach.
However, the US-based Flight Safety Foundation, an independent non-profit organisation researching air accidents across the globe, lists just three fatal crashes at or near the asphalt landing strip since 1970.
In another recent accident in Nepal, a small Buddha Air plane taking tourists on a sightseeing trip around Mount Everest crashed in September last year, killing all 19 people on board.

'Paa' actor Taruni Sachdev's father to bring back her body

Mumbai: Even as they reeled from the shock of losing their loved ones, relatives of five of the 13 Indian passengers who died in the Nepal plane crash had to perform the painful task of flying to Kathmandu yesterday, in order to claim the bodies of their relatives.
A total of 13 passengers died in the air disaster that took place in the cliffs of Jomson on Monday morning. Of them, five lived in Mumbai. Their relatives are now in the process of completing the necessary formalities in Kathmandu, and will be returning by Thursday.
All the five deceased were part of the group that was on its way to the Muktinath temple, as part of a pilgrimage. The crash claimed the life of 14-year-old Taruni Sachdev, the critically acclaimed child artist who acted in the award-winning Amitabh Bachchan starrer 'Paa'. Her mother Geeta Sachdev was also killed. "Taruni's father Harish left for Kathmandu on May 16 to claim the bodies of his daughter and wife. He is expected to return on May 17," said Mukesh Bajaj, Taruni's uncle, yesterday.

"Geeta called us at around 9 am, just before boarding the flight. Shockingly, all this happened just a few minutes later," said Bajaj. The Sachdevs, learnt about the demise of their loved ones from a news flash aired on a TV channel. At the Arora household on Peddar Road, friends and family members poured in to offer their condolences.
The Aroras owned a hardware factory in Nashik, and would often undertake pilgrimages. "The couple's younger daughter Prerna had intended to join them for the trip, but ultimately decided against it," said a source close to the family. "Menaka's brothers Yash and Rajendra Mehra, and her daughter Prerna left for Kathmandu early in the morning today, to claim the bodies of their loved ones," added the source.
"I spoke to the relatives after they reached Kathmandu, they have received the bodies. They are in the process of completing formalities, and are unsure if they will be able fly back on Wednesday or Thursday," said a family friend of the Aroras.

Osama bin Laden was devising a strategy for overthrowing Afghan President Hamid Karzai and controlling Afghanistan once the US left the country, said a former U.S. official familiar with the cache of notes and letters that were seized last year in the raid on the terrorist leader's compound.

Bin Laden had discussed his plans with the Taliban leadership council, known as the Quetta Shura, and the Haqqani network, which controls the North Waziristan tribal area in Pakistan, said the former official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity while discussing the intelligence.

The haul of documents, hard drives and flash drives show bin Laden seeking to shape the future of Afghanistan but also struggling to manage an organization fractured by CIA drone assassinations and hampered by inexperienced leaders, officials say.

A declassified selection of the vast trove of material will be published online Thursday morning by the Combating Terrorism Center, a think tank at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

The Taliban and Al Qaeda don't agree on everything but still have a "relatively strong" relationship, said Seth Jones, an expert on al-Qaida at the Santa Monica, Calif.-based Rand Corp. think tank and author of "Hunting in the Shadows: The Pursuit of al Qa'ida Since 9/11."

"They are attempting to overthrow the Karzai regime, and they are both willing to work with each other to do that," he said.

The release of the declassified material follows President Barack Obama's surprise visit to Afghanistan on Tuesday that administration officials acknowledged was timed to coincide with the anniversary of the death of bin Laden.

Republicans have criticized the Obama campaign for using the killing of bin Laden by U.S. forces in Pakistan on May 2, 2011, as a political talking point.

The documents captured at that time also show that a key go-between for U.S. negotiations with the Taliban in Afghanistan had also been in touch with bin Laden.

Mohammed Tayeb Agha, an aide to Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar, met with U.S. officials at least three times in spring 2011. He was also in communication with bin Laden, who was looking for assurances about what kind of haven Al Qaeda's senior leaders would have in Afghanistan after a U.S. military withdrawal.

Some experts say the apparent double dealing underscores the uncertainty surrounding talks with the Taliban.

"I don't think a deal with them will mean a lot if the political situation shifts, and I think it inevitably will," said Brian Fishman, an Al Qaedaexpert at the New America Foundation in Washington.

But a U.S. official, noting that Tayeb Agha was in contact with a variety of groups, said, "It isn't a surprise to anyone that he has a less-than-clean Rolodex." The official asked not to be identified while discussing sensitive national security issues.

Bin Laden lamented the poor judgment shown by the rising crop of al-Qaida leaders. He was increasingly concerned that al-Qaida's credibility among Muslims had plummeted because commanders had bombed mosques and launched attacks that spilled the blood of fellow Muslims.

The missives show he was trying to steer the organization from regional conflicts and toward attacking the U.S. and other Western countries, known as the "far enemy." He wrote that "a large portion" of Muslims have "lost their trust" in al-Qaida, said U.S. officials who have read the documents.

Al-Qaida's leadership even discussed changing the organization's name to revive its reputation, John Brennan, the top counterterrorism adviser to Obama, said in a speech Monday.

Brennan said the bin Laden letters prove that the CIA's controversial campaign of drone missile strikes has decimated al-Qaida's leadership, hurt morale and made it harder for al-Qaida to recruit new members.

"In short, al-Qaida is losing, badly," Brennan said. "And bin Laden knew it. In documents we seized, he confessed to 'disaster after disaster.' He even urged his leaders to flee the tribal regions and go to places 'away from aircraft photography and bombardment.'"

Brennan said that al-Qaida's leaders continue to struggle to communicate with subordinates and affiliates, and that it is "harder than ever" for the leadership to plan attacks against the U.S.

Figures from the National Counterterrorism Center show that successful attacks by al-Qaida have dropped 16 percent in the year since bin Laden's death compared with the year before, according to an analysis released this week by the Center for American Progress in Washington.

Although the threat from al-Qaida's top leadership in Pakistan may be declining, the organization's branches in Somalia, Yemen and North Africa are operating with more independence, officials said.
